The Trifid Nebula

Tri-color on Technical Pan film - 8" f/4.5 Newtonian telescope

- Embedded in the star clouds of Sagittarius, the Trifid Nebula is one of the most remarkably detailed clouds of nebulosity in the Milky Way. The dark dust lanes that divide it into three parts give it its name.

The bright red color is created as the gas cloud is charged by the hot stars within it. The blue portion of the nebula is created by dust reflecting the light of nearby stars. Looking closely you will see a wreath of blue surrounding the entire nebula.
